What is orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport in which competitors race to pass through control points marked on a map in sequence. It is divided into two main categories; sprint events, which are mainly held in urban areas, and forest events (middle and long distances), which take place in woodland. At WMOC 2027, each of these events will be organised using a qualifying and final format. The only entry requirement is an age limit (35 years or older). Competitive ability and previous achievements are not taken into account. Although the format is a qualifying and final system, even if you do not perform well in the qualifiers, everyone can take part in the final race and enjoy themselves. As the forest events involve navigating alone in the countryside, we ask that you familiarise yourself with the basic rules of the sport and map-reading so that you can prepare to enjoy the event safely. The Sprint event is relatively accessible even for beginners. We believe you will enjoy the event more if you try it out a few times beforehand at competitions aimed at beginners. The website below provides technical explanations for beginners to orienteering and introduces various events held across the country. There are also permanent courses that can be enjoyed at any time. Here are some useful links and videos that will help you gain a better understanding of orienteering.
